Laurie Ferguson attended the Federation of Vietnamese Women's Associations of Australia (FVWAA) gala dinner in Fairfield on 11 September 2009. The FVWAA was established in 1994 as the national umbrella organisation to represent the interests and settlement needs of Australian Vietnamese women and their families.
The Parliamentary Secretary congratulated the organisation on its 15th anniversary for its work, particularly in preserving cultural heritage and community-building. He also noted the resilience, resourcefulness, compassion, tolerance and generosity displayed by so many members of the Vietnamese community.
There were 154 830 Vietnam-born people in Australia at the 2001 Census, making up 3.8 per cent of the overseas-born population and 0.8 per cent of the total Australian population.
