On April 15, Laurie Ferguson attended the 20th anniversary celebration of the Maltese Women's Group in Liverpool. The date also marked the 67th anniversary of the Maltese people receiving the George Cross for bravery during World War II.

The first Maltese people arrived in Australia in 1810. In 1838, 61 Maltese labourers were recruited to work on Queensland sugar plantations.

According to the 2006 Census, there are now almost 44 000 people who were born in Malta living in Australia. Nearly 39 per cent of them live in New South Wales.

Mr Ferguson commended the support the women's group has provided to the local Maltese community over the past two decades. The group meets regularly and organises guest speakers and activities.
