The Parliamentary Secretary for Multicultural Affairs and Settlement Services, Laurie Ferguson, visited Tasmania on October 24. In Launceston, Mr Ferguson officially launched two pilot programs at TAFE Tasmania's city campus: Employment Pathways and Traineeships in English and Work Readiness Programs 7. He also joined participants and mentors from the various business and community sectors in group discussions around the participants' employment goals and expectations from the initiatives.

Mr Ferguson then travelled to Hobart for the opening of the 10th Filipino Communities Council of Australia National Conference. The biannual three-day conference was hosted by Luz ViMinda Filipino Communities Council (FILCCA) of Tasmania. FILCCA is the national peak body of Filipino community associations. Delegates from the affiliated state and territory councils joined other Filipino Australians from around the nation to share learning and discuss strategies for the future around the conference themes of building capacity, connection, and community strength. The visit also allowed the parliamentary secretary the opportunity to receive updates on projects being conducted in Tasmania with Department of Immigration and Citizenship participation.
