The 2008 Global Chinese Media Summit, hosted by the Chinese International Media Association in Melbourne, included in addition to guest speaker Laurie Ferguson, Parliamentary Secretary for Multicultural Affairs and Settlement Services, delegates and representatives from Chinese media organisations from Canada, the United States of America, Europe, Asia, South America, Australia and China. The purpose of the Global Chinese Media Summit is to provide a forum for media professionals to discuss contemporary media issues with a particular focus on the Chinese media. Mr Ferguson, who spoke at the gala dinner and summit, addressed the issue of the history of Chinese media in Australia. He also explained to summit delegates the role of the media in Australia and the exchange of opinions and ideas in a peaceful, respectful and tolerant manner.
'Free speech is an ideal we hold as a core value in Australia and a multilingual media makes an important contribution to upholding this value in a multicultural society,' Mr Ferguson said.
