Young people cross a bridge of cultural understanding
25 August 2009
A vibrant display of visual arts, dance, short films and musical performances showcasing the achievements of young Muslim people is about to go on show in the Sydney suburb of Auburn, the Parliamentary Secretary for Multicultural Affairs and Settlement Services, Laurie Ferguson, announced today.
‘Across My Bridge is an exciting arts project that has been running for 12 months. It involves a series of workshops for young people to gain a broad range of creative skills and at the same time build links to their communities,’ Mr Ferguson said.
In honour of the occasion, artworks produced by participants in the past year will be on display.
‘Across My Bridge creates an effective means of self-expression, encouraging youth to discuss and face difficulties they are experiencing and to identify with Australia’s diverse culture and history,’ Mr Ferguson said.
‘The project is particularly focused on engaging disaffected Muslim youth in Sydney’s western suburbs who experience a range of problems, including disengagement from society and discrimination in the community. Project participants are encouraged to recognise their own unique place in Australian society.’
Across My Bridge, delivered by Beyond Empathy, is funded through a community grant under DIAC’s National Action Plan to Build on Social Cohesion, Harmony and Security, with support from the NSW government and the local community.
‘In the past year, Across My Bridge has fostered relationships between young participants, arts workers, support agency staff and the community. I am certain that the project and these links can only get stronger in the coming year,’ Mr Ferguson said.Media contact: Carla Wilshire 0432 755 935
