Honours for diversity contributions
9 June 2009
The Parliamentary Secretary for Multicultural Affairs and Settlement Services, Laurie Ferguson, today congratulated those who have been recognised with an award in the Queen's Birthday Honours list for their contribution to a multicultural Australia.
Mr Ferguson said those who received the Order of Australia in the 2009 Honours List included Australians who have made a significant and selfless contribution to promoting cultural diversity in the community.
‘These people have contributed, in most cases, years of their time, effort and resources to build a fair, inclusive society based on mutual respect and have been rewarded for making Australia's cultural diversity a success,’ Mr Ferguson said.
‘Cultural diversity is a source of both social and economic wealth. It gives vibrancy and dynamism to Australian life and is essential to the strength of the nation.
‘However, it is the often unacknowledged contribution of community workers such as these that makes a vibrant and cohesive society.
‘I warmly congratulate all those recipients who have contributed their time and effort, for their vision,’ he added.
