Parliamentary secretary extends best wishes for Ramadan
Saturday 30 August 2008
At the start of Ramadan one of the most important dates in the Muslim calendar, the Parliamentary Secretary for Multicultural Affairs and Settlement Services, Laurie Ferguson, today extended his best wishes to Australia’s Muslim communities.
‘Australia’s 340 000 Muslims come from a large number of diverse ethnicities, cultural backgrounds and display an extremely diverse range of lifestyles. These communities have made a great contribution, helping our country become more open, enterprising, innovative and creative,’ Mr Ferguson said.
‘Australia is a society that cherishes freedom of religion and we remain committed to welcoming individuals of all religions and cultural backgrounds. Similiarily, the government is resolute in preserving an individual’s right of self definition and a pluralistic society.
‘By working together to advance democratic freedoms and mutual understanding, we can create a brighter future of hope and opportunity for all Australians.’
The commencement of the holy month of Ramadan begins with the first light of dawn commemorating the revelation of the Qur'an to the Prophet Muhammed.
The Qur'an has guided Muslims for many centuries by teaching the importance of justice, compassion and peace. During the month of Ramadan, Muslims practise the commands of God through fasting and prayer and show charity to those in need.
‘This is a time when both Muslims and non-Muslims alike can reflect on the values that we share such as peacefulness, tolerance, mutual respect and compassion,’ Mr Ferguson said.
‘I wish all Muslim Australians the very best for Ramadan and I look forward to celebrating the Eid festival at its conclusion. I also note the continuing proliferation of evening Iftar celebrations both by Muslim groups and also Australian community organisations including businesses that are inclusive of non-Muslims,’ he added.Media Contact: Khaldoun Hajaj - 0404 078 692
