Funds to promote stronger community relations

Thursday, 24 April 2008

Communities across Australia are being encouraged to apply for funds to develop projects that promote stronger community relations and address issues of racial, cultural and religious intolerance.

The Parliamentary Secretary for Multicultural Affairs and Settlement Services, Laurie Ferguson, said today $1.5 million has been set aside for community relations activities, which for the first time includes $100 000 specifically to assist community organisations deliver smaller scale projects.

“Under this new arrangement, amounts of up to $5000 will be available to organisations for activities such as community events, forums and information sessions,” Mr Ferguson said.

“In addition, funding of between $5000 and $50 000 will be available for major projects of up to 12 months’ duration.

“Both sets of funding will provide much-needed additional resources and wider scope for organisations to develop their own ways of helping all Australians build stronger community relations.”

Applications for funding will be open to incorporated, not-for-profit organisations.  Groups such as school communities, non-profit foundations, service clubs, sporting bodies, ethnic communities, youth organisations, local government authorities, universities and colleges of education are invited to submit proposals.

Applications must be lodged with the Department of Immigration and Citizenship by 6pm Eastern Standard Time, 23 May 2008.
