WA students win Harmony Day photographic awards

Thursday, 20 March 2008

Four Western Australian high school students have won first prizes in the WA Harmony Day Photographic Competition.

The students will be presented with their awards at a ceremony to be held at the State Library in the Perth Cultural Centre, next Wednesday (March 26).

The Parliamentary Secretary for Multicultural Affairs and Settlement Services, Laurie Ferguson, today congratulated all those who participated and said he was heartened by the level of community support for cultural diversity in Australia.

'It's wonderful to see so many people taking the initiative to build understanding and acceptance in their local communities,' Mr Ferguson said.

'Schools, business, local government, sporting and community groups have all indicated their continuing support for Harmony Day as we work to find ways to reach a broader audience and make the program even more effective.'

High school students across WA were invited to explore the themes of living in harmony through the medium of photography. Their entries will be displayed at the State Library in the coming weeks.

The winners of this year's competition are:

Year 12 – Michelle Carere of Ballajura Community College
Year 11 – Blake Burton of Duncraig Senior High School
Year 10 – Stephanie Clauson of Duncraig Senior High Schoolv Year 9 – Alisha Claffey of Seton Catholic College.

Harmony Day has been held in Australia on March 21 since 1999, but this year, as it falls on Good Friday, many organisations have chosen an alternative date for their activities.
