Youth songs, music and dance make a tapestry of peace

Thursday, 20 March 2008

Rap, jazz, classical, rock, hip hop, a cappella and folk songs will be part of an innovative performance today from the SBS Youth Orchestra as part of the SBS Peace Song Tapestries Concert.

The Parliamentary Secretary for Multicultural Affairs and Settlement Services, Laurie Ferguson, said the concert is a celebration of Australia’s cultural diversity and community harmony.

‘Over the past year, young people from across the country have come together to create musical compilations via an on-line studio as part of the SBS Radio Peace Song Tapestries project,’ Mr Ferguson said.

‘Young people have used the Peace Song Tapestries website and the downloadable music studio to create content for the radio program, concentrating on the themes of harmony, reconciliation, peace and social cohesion,’ he said.

Showcasing personal experiences and interpretations of cultural diversity, the performance will feature creative musical works from young Australians that include live performances and short films from a wide range of music genres.

‘The Peace Song Tapestries Concert celebrates the best of the students’ work and symbolises the wonderful opportunity young Australians have to share the richness and diversity of each other's experiences and to pool their creative talents,’ Mr Ferguson said.

The SBS Radio Peace Song Tapestries project and concert is supported by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship and the City of Sydney and will be staged at the Sydney City Recital Hall.
