The Minister for Immigration and Citizenship, Senator Chris Evans, said the Government’s abolition of the Temporary Protection visa (TPV) regime would help about 1000 refugees rebuild their lives in Australia at a press conference at Parliament House on May 15. He said the move honoured an election promise and reaffirmed the Rudd Government‘s commitment to human rights.

From July 1, refugees on TPVs who are currently in Australia will receive a permanent visa, regardless of their mode of arrival. Provided they meet security and character requirements, they will be granted permanent residency in Australia and will not need to have their protection claims reassessed.

Senator Evans was joined at the press conference by 28-year-old Afghan refugee Mohammad Dawlat-Hussain who arrived in Australia in 2001 and was detained at the Nauru Offshore Processing Centre until his application for a humanitarian visa was successful in 2004.
