Minister for Immigration and Citizenship, Senator Chris Evans’ first conferral of Australian citizenship was on the 26-year-old American-born Perth Wildcat forward Shawn Redhage.

The January 12, 2008 ceremony occurred courtside just before an NBL game at Perth’s Challenge Stadium in front of a sell-out crowd of 4200 people.

Senator Evans described the conferral as a coup for Australian basketball in the lead-up to the Beijing Olympics.

Mr Redhage also expressed his excitement about his chance to pursue a place in the Australian Olympic basketball team.
