Resolution reached in Tony Tran matter
Wednesday, 19 December 2007
A step towards the final resolution in the long-running Binh Van Tran (or Tony Tran) matter has been reached, the Minister for Immigration and Citizenship, Senator Chris Evans, announced today.
'I am committed to resolving outstanding issues I have inherited in this portfolio,' the minister said, 'and delivering an outcome on Tony Tran’s legal status is an important part of that commitment.'
Tony Tran was one of the 247 cases referred by the department in 2005 and 2006 for investigation by the Commonwealth Ombudsman.
The legality of his detention by the department and Mr Tran’s visa status were the subject of the referral.
'Part of the process of resolving these outstanding issues is my decision today to grant Mr Tran permanent residence,' Senator Evans said.
'This is a longstanding case on which the Ombudsman has reported, and which my department has been working to reach a resolution.
'In acknowledging the continuing contributions of the Ombudsman to the process of change and reform in my department, I also want to thank him for identifying those issues where improvements can be made.
'Today’s announcement regarding Mr Tran’s permanent residency visa status forms part of my response to the Ombudsman’s recommendations and findings.
'We need to continue to resolve these outstanding cases so that we can rebuild confidence in the system,' the minister added.URL: http://www.minister.immi.gov.au
