NSW foster mother wins 2012 Local Hero

The Minister for Immigration and Citizenship, Chris Bowen MP, today congratulated Australia’s 2012 Local Hero, foster mother Lynne Sawyers, of Darbys Falls in New South Wales.
She was recognised for sharing her home, family and love with more than 200 foster children, as part of the annual Australian of the Year Awards.
Mr Bowen said the Local Hero award acknowledged Australians such as Lynne who selflessly donate their time and effort to make a real difference to their communities.
‘Lynne embodies what makes a great citizen: she is someone who steps forward to lend a hand and give back to the community, without wanting recognition or acknowledgement,’ Mr Bowen said.
‘She is a shining example of the impact one person can have on the lives of others.’
For 15 years, Lynne has been on call to care for lost and abused children, often in heartbreaking circumstances. Living near Cowra with her husband Ken and own daughter Emma, she has taken in up to six foster children at a time, giving them all a supportive family environment.
At the age of 68, she continues to work tirelessly to give these children a better chance at a good life, travelling hundreds of kilometres every week, preparing up to 15 meals a day, and raising funds to help children. Because of her commitment and compassion, many are now leading fulfilled, happy lives and have adopted Lynne as their ‘second mother’.
‘It is a great honour to once again be involved in the Australian of the Year Awards, with my department a proud sponsor of Australia’s Local Hero Award for the 10th year running,’ Mr Bowen said.
